Today we visited the vineyards above Lake Leman near Vevey. The best place to start is the small village of Chexbres which has a good restaurant and being situated at the top of the hillside the walking is all downhill. So we take the train to Chexbres.
Chexbres station is very attractive being surrounded with flowers |
The Lion D'Or is well signed in the center of the village |
There is a large selection of wines available and we specify a good red from the village |
The meal was excellent as was the wine. This is the time of the vendange (don't forget this is a virtual tour so we are now in September) and there are several tables of vineyard workers taking a well earned lunch. The owner approached us and asked us how we liked the wine. We said it was excellent. He replied, in French, "That's good because the owner of the vineyard is sitting at the next table."
The owner of the vineyard was sitting with his crew. He was very proud of his wine. |
It was now time to walk through the vineyards down towards the lake. These terraced vineyards have been used for several centuries and have received a World Heritage designation.
At the small port of Rivaz a paddle steamer is calling |
We can make out several squalls on the other side of the lake but the weather this side remains calm and sunny. |
