Today we will travel to Morges on the way towards Geneva. It is a quick trip and we transfer to the narrow gauge train to Biere. This interestingly-named village is at the end of a the line which goes through Apples, a small junction.
Yes, the village named Biere actually does exist |
Biere |
Biere has a water trough of course |
The main reason for coming to Biere is the Cafe du Commerce, we remembered not to come on Mondays as it is closed |
The lunch menu is quite short, no chevaline. |
The lunch special is excellent and well received by the patrons. The restaurant is crowded - everyone arrives around noon as the shops close for lunch |
Feeling full, we made our way back to the station stopping to admire a display of cowbells. |
On the way back to Morges we stop at Apples and change to the branch train for L'Isle
L'Isle-Mont-la-Ville |
The train to L'Isle is a little spotty so we take a quick look around and return to Apples to catch the train to our next stop Vufflens.
Vufflens has a magnificent chateau overlooking the vineyards |
There are exceptional views over the vineyards towards Lake Leman (Geneva) and the French Alps beyond |
Back at the Vufflens station we are lucky enough to see a narrow gauge freight train of lumber. the standard gauge cars are carried on narrow gauge skates or trucks. |
We catch the train back to Morges and while we are waiting for the train back to Neuchatel we can observe how standard gauge cars are transferred on to and off narrow gauge skates. This railway makes more money from freight than passengers. They serve a military base and occasionally transport tanks and other large military vehicles over the narrow gauge.
