Virtual Railfan Tour - Miniatur Wunderland - The Details (Part One)

Image
Parking ramp used as a race track for kids while a car waits for the barrier to raise. Martin Cobb photo One of the beauties of Miniatur Wunderland is the amazing attention to detail. Modelers show an understanding of the way of life and demonstrate the ability to portray the essential details that we frequently manage to omit.  They also show a great sense of humor and portray items just a little bit larger than life.  Here we will show many of the small items that reward a close look at the models. A large rock concert neets a lot of porta potties It is not quite clear what is being launched into the lake here A roadway barrier placed close to the end of the bridge A fluffy rabbit locomotive This is what happens when you come to the end of the world Nums contemplate the end of the world This is an opera house. Every so often the front swings open so viewers can see the detail inside. A monorail system - cut off for easy viewing Tremendous detail on this beach scene No...

Virtual Railfan Tour - Miniatur Wunderland - Knuffingen Airport

Image
Although this is billed as a model railway the airport is likely the most popular attraction. The airport quickly becomes crowded with visitors who love the action.  It is a good idea to come here early. The Millenium Falcon is a regularly scheduled flight The airport is set out on a very large scale The bumblebee is another regular visitor There is, of course, a railway connection No Miniatur Wunderland scene is complete without a fun fair An old aircraft is used for fire fighting practice Even the parking lots are big Concorde take off Millenium Falcon Click here to see all Paul's pictures and videos of Knuffingen Airport Twenty minutes of plane spotting at Knuffingen Airport Video of the Airport Behind the Scenes

Virtual Railfan Tour - Miniatur Wunderland - Behind the Scenes

Image
This was lunch on my first trip. We started at 0830 and literally didn't have time to stop as there was so much to see. We left saddened by thinking about the things we had not seen or absorbed thoroughly. We invariably buy our entry in advance getting in as early as possible, (around 0800).  Even so it is difficult to be satisfied with just one day and on recent trips we have spent two full days here.  It is also possible to book a Behind the Scenes Tour, in English. It lasts for an hour and the guides are happy to answer our questions. The tours start from the central control area The tour allows us to see the exhibit from a different perspective. Some of the walkways are narrow and not very high. The kids have a distinct advantage here. The shorter people have an advantage Truck recharging point. Picture thanks to Martin Cobb The trucks on the roadway system are battery powered.  When the system senses the battery needs recharging the vehicle is automatically ro...
