Virtual Railfan Tour of Switzerland - Saturday - Bern
Bern
This shows the Bern station layout, The adjacent tram station, shown in purple, is close by while the narrow gauge RBS tracks, in green are at right angles underground. The main station with its long platforms, is on a curve.
The main platforms are almost completely covered so this is a difficult location for train watching. This was our first view of the BLS heritage excursion we were eagerly looking forward to joining.
We had to wait until the other end of the trip before we could see the train properly.
The concourse is busy. With so many departures to all parts of the country and abroad the departure screen can only show the trains for the next half hour or so.
To look at trains it is necessary to go to the platform ends
East End
There is always lots of action
A DB ICE train is leaving for Basel and the north
West End - there is a little more light at this end
The overbridge is interesting.
Both SBB and BLS use this station. Here an older BLS Re 4/4 is bringing in a suburban train
Newer BLS multiple unit.
An unusual sight - this locomotive has been tagged.
Passenger switching id carried out by these small four-wheeled shunters.
The RBS narrow gauge line carries heavy local traffic.
If the station is not the best for train watching there is a lot more of interest in Bern
Historic centre
The steam tram runs on the first Sunday of the summer months
There are always to bears to see
Street furniture can be interesting
