Virtual Railfan Tour of Switzerland - Monday - Steam railways we would like to visit

Furka steam railway

We have now written over 110 blogs focused on the railways of Switzerland. Paul and I have just about come to the end of our material.  We thought we might branch off elsewhere (Hamburg, Amsterdam, UK?) but before doing so there are a few items we would like to include in our next visit that we have not yet seen. There are a couple of steam operated routes which are foremost in this list.

The Furka Steam Railway

(Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke (DFB)) is a largely volunteer operated heritage railway which operates a partially rack and pinion-operated line across the Furka Pass, between Realp and Oberwald. Culminating at 2,160 metres (7,087 ft), above sea level, it is an old mountainous section of the Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) that was abandoned after the construction of the Furka Tunnel. It has been gradually brought back into service by the Verein Furka-Bergstrecke with the use of only steam locomotives, some repatriated from Vietnam with the entire line completed in 2010.

The route of the steam railway is shown in orange, the diversion tunnel is the dotted purple line shown as MGB-fo

The Emmental Railway
This is a freight only line that runs from Huttwill to Sumiswald Grunen.  There is a bus service along the line freight service is operated by the BLS. The museum railway is an associaton of two independent associations The trains run on the second Sunday of each month from April to October.

The area covered is to the east of Bern

Certainly something to look forward to next year.
