Virtual Railfan Tour - On the Way to Hamburg - Kassel
Artwork on Kassel station platform - photo thanks to Martin Cobb
On most trips between Frankfurt and Hamburg we have managed to catch a through train. On one occasion we had to change trains at Kassel. We had an hour or so to look around
There was the usual diet of high speed ICE trains
An inspection car was lurking in a short siding.
The local trains are not immune to graffiti
There were a number of short freight trains
But the most impressive part of our short visit was the integrated tram and bus network which was centred right by the station concourse.
The buses and trams can use the same platforms
This made for a very pleasant interlude in our journey. The only downside was that we couldn't find a place that sold ice cream.
Our connecting train arrived on time and we shared a compartment with a delightful companion
The trams now share the main railway network
