Virtual Railfan Tour of Paraguay - Asuncion Station
The station in Asuncion is an imposing building
In 1984 it was kept spotless but handled very few trains
The first locomotive was plinthed
Bearing in mind the great difficulty I had in getting into the roundhouse I was allowed free range to walk around the station yard and photograph anything.
There were locomotives stabled all over the place
The bars on the tender allowed for additional firewood to be stacked
There were even a couple of train movements
Two gauge glasses but neither of them had any safety glass protection. From the look of the water it seemed that boiler washouts were not very frequent.. I decided I did not want to get any closer then this - if a glass breaks there would be a shower of live steam and glass particles.
A 2-6-2 tank engine
The railway was still carrying passengers in 1984. There was even talk about extending the line to the airport to bring airline passengers into town. However it was another ten years or so before I returned to sample these trains in the countryside
