Vitual Railfan Tour of Bolivia - Finale
La Paz
I don't want to leave Bolivia without talking a little bit about living in La Paz. The airport is around 13300 feet, La Paz is about 1000 feet lower and I lived in Calacoto, a suburb some 1000 feet lower still. I commuted a thousand feet up to the office daily using the frequent jitneys.
One day a friend living in Calacoto offered to take me into the countryside back of Calacoto. I had no idea what beautiful countryside we were to see.
All of the above in a couple of hours one afternoon. Wild and rugged with traces of farming wherever flat land could be found. Magnificent
Calacoto had its own Carnaval. Dancing in the street started around midday and lasted well into evening.Living in La Paz was a lot of fun. The Witches Market in La Paz was always interesting, although I refrained from buying a llama foetus.
Of course, if I wanted to get out of town I could always go up to Lake Titicaca for the weekend.
