Virtual Railfan Tour of Uruguay (1984) - Visit to Panarol Shops
We were taken to see Penarol shops which were a mix between locomotive and equipment maintenance facilities and a dump for old, outmoded items ready for the scrapper
Penarol is a little way north of Montevideo just east of the main line
There was a large roundhouse which was not greatly used
No details
Passenger cars were worked on in this large shed
Much of the work was carried out in the open
There were a couple of small shop switchers. 201 is a GE 25Ton
204 is also a GE 25 Ton, with a more modern paint scheme
Another steam locomotive tender in operable condition
There was a good supply of plain bearing archbar trucks (which were banned in interchange service in North America in 1940 or 1941)
An even more flimsy arch bar truck
Wooden frame trucks
Bearing in mind my interest in grain transportation I was shown a modern hopper car
But much of the interest was in the assorted junk lying around. This is No. 1501 the first of a series of Alco locomotives delivered in 1952
915 is a Ganz-MAVAG (1977-78); 804 is a 1964 Alsthom
The dead line.
But the real prize was this Beyer-Peacock Sentinel vertical boilered locomotive built in Manchester, England in 1889.
