Virtual Railfan Tour of Uruguay - A Visit to Dr. Carnelli
No this wasn't a visit to a doctor's office but Dr. L. Carnelli is a station just north of the Montevideo terminal. I bought a ticket, a standard Edmondson card with the date 17 NOV 84 stamped into it at the booking office.
This is a recent map from openrailwaymaps.org showing the main line with a branch to the Montevideo docks. It looks as if the old covered terminal station has been replaced with a much smaller building.
At the time of my visit Carnelli was quite busy. This is a 1954 Alco
This is a 1963 Alsthom
This is a ferrobus, formerly a Deutsche Bundesbahn railbus by Uerdingen Class 95
The interlocking tower adjoined the station platform
The running shed was adjacent to the main line
There was a great deal of equipment stored here
The railway had a variety of small switchers. General Electric Model 25-ton and 44-ton as well as Nippon Sharyo 41-ton
The rotting remains of a 4-6-0 tank
There were a large number of old steam locomotive tenders in seemingly good shape. I was to learn later that these were quite useful
Just before returning to Montevideo I saw this mixed train with passengers at the front and freight on the rear
