Virtual Railfan Tour of Chile - Around Santiago
Unlike Valparaiso, Santiago only has one funicular. Unfortunately if goes through the center of the Santiago zoo where one can see some unfortunate caged animals. We chose not to visit the zoo.
There is a railway museum at the Quinta Normal park which, at the time of my visit, had a number of well kept exhibits. No 3349 is a meter gauge 0-8-6-0RT from the Transandino Railway.
No. 1110 is an EFE (state railway) 4-8-4
Down at Eiffel's train shed diesels were evident as well as electrics
The yard resembled an unkempt garden.
This is the overnight sleeping car train which we will take to get us down south
Not only is this broad gauge but the cars are built to a wide clearance envelope
There is plenty of room in these opulent German-built sleeping cars
Our train is ready to depart but before doing so we will have a trip over a moribund line part way south.
