Virtual Railfan Tour of Chile - Deep South
The main line from Santiago runs south to Temuco and then extends further south to Osorno and Puerto Montt. We have taken the overnight sleeping car from Santiago to Temuco on several occasions. The trip started out with electric haulage but I am not sure how far south the electrification extends. One time we were woken up by a loud scraping on the roof of our car. It turned out the pantograph had come adrift on the locomotive and was trapped between the train and the overhead electric wires. We were late into Temuco that time
There is a very impressive roundhouse museum at Temuco
I have been on a couple of steam trips on the line towards Puerto Montt.

Our trips created some interest from the local people
We were observed by non-human onlookers as well
Southern Chile has a very green countryside, a pleasant change from the desert north
This was, I believe, at Puerto Montt. The locomotive is a broad gauge shovel nose.
Puerto Montt is the end of the line for Chile. From here one can either return north towards Santiago or venture west by road and boat into Argentina at Bariloche
