Virtual Railfan Tour of Ecuador 1988 - Playing around Alausi and on the Devil's Nose
After a cold night we left the cat and her newborn kittens to spend some time with 2-8-0 No. 45, shown here waiting for us at Alausi.
There is a steep grade out of Alausi and the rails had to be sanded. Here the train is backing down with the crew laying sand on the rails.
Going forward the sanding continued using sand from the sand box on the pilot beam.
We did this several times
There is a high trestle on the outskirts of town
Two runpasts allowed us to see the train from both sides.
From Alausi we went back for several runpasts on the Devil's Nose itself
Upper switchback
From the switchback we could look down on Sibambe, The main line to Bucay branches to the right while on the left is the branch to Cuenca
Most people rode the roof
At Simbabe we had to get down and load ourselves and our luggage into this Ferrobus which would take us to Cuenca
