Virtual Railfan Tour of Ecuador 1993 - Up the Devil's Nose Again
I believe our train was sent ahead from Sibambe so we could watch it climb the Devil's Nose. We would them follow up to Alausi on the regular service train. Here our train is reversing between the two switchbacks
The special is now on the upper sectionr
Preparations are being made to feed the passengers
This is the take out restaurant car with hot meals.
Orders for the roof are passed up
It is a bit of a climb but the roof is worthwhile - and if there is a derailment one knows which side to jump.
There is a constant flow of sales people along the roof selling snacks, drinks, trinkets, shoe shine etc. The train staff come by collecting fares and checking tickets. We were assigned a first class roof and made the trip in "comfort". However the normal traveler has to be aware - there is the story about the traveler who was thrown off the train by the crew because he was travelling on a first class roof with a second class ticket.
We caught up with our train at Alausi.
