Virtual Railfan Tour - Moribund Jamaica
Painting depicting the opening of the Jamaica Railway in 1843
The Jamaica Government Railway closed in October 1992 after many years of neglect. I spent two months in Jamaica in 2002-03 working on a transportation project. I was surprised to learn that the railway organization still existed largely to manage the large and profitable land holdings. I took these pictures in Kingston at that time.
There were still a few bauxite railways operating on the island but I didn't manage to see them.
No. 54 was the last remaining steam locomotive. It had been retained to run tourist specials before the line closed.
No. 54 was built in Canada
Much equipment was stored under cover in the station train shed
I found this diesel in the yard
There was a well equipped shop
A motorail inspection car
The yard was desolate
This is a favorite shot. It shows how nature will gradually take over if left undisturbed,
