Virtual Railfan Tour - Fiji Sugar Cane Railway
In 1990 Mary and I made a special trip to Fiji. There was a wonderful cruise on a small vessel and we had a great visit. As a side issue the cane railway was in operation and I was able to get a few shots.
The weather and scenery combined to produce a great experience. This is in the Sigatoka area.
The railways in Fiji were 2' 6" gauge and were constructed mainly for sugar cane. However, a free passenger service was provided at one time and tickets for this were issued
This map shows the general location of the cane operations on the main island. We stayed at Lautoka on the west (left) side but ventured down to Sigatoka with a rental car.
In this area the main processing factory is at Lautoka
Taking empties from the mill at Lautoka
Mill sidings with No. 6 closest (Clyde s.n. 196 of 1958)
In the background is a train of cars for processed sugar.
No 12 is a Bo-Bo built by E.M. Baldwin at Castle Hill, NSW., Australia. (s.n. 8290/2 of 1979) This was on the Rarawai Mill roster
Hunslet 9267 was No. 17 from the Lautoka Mill. 4 wheel diesel hydraulic.
Believed to be No. 17 at Lautoka
No 18, a Hunslet bringing some cane to Lautoka. I cannot identify this in my lists
Near Lautoka. No. 5, closest, is a Clyde 0-6-0D built in 1958
Not all the cane made it safely to the mill

With the mess cleared up trains were able to resume
