Virtual Railfan Tour Philippines Sugar Cane Railways - Hawaiian Philippines into the fields
This is one of my favorite pictures. It shows our train with steam locomotive No. 2 dwarfed by some palm trees.
Our train ready to depart from the main yard
The company was also running some passenger trains. We had to keep out of their way.
The Pantalan Express
There was also a sophisticated unofficial service for both passengers and freight, We came across one wagon loaded with an upright piano.
We were finally free to enjoy ourselves
However, having cleared the "human" meets we came across some more formidable opponents
With very sharp horns the buffalo were almost as big as our locomotive and probably more dangerous
To make matters worse at twelve noon precisely the crew stopped for an hour to have their lunch
We were left to wander around these animals which were described as "mostly harmless".
After the lunch break we carried on. At one time these locomotives were painted green but the color was changed because they tended to become lost in the vegetation. I think the color was later changed to red to make them stand out even more. This made sense as the crew man's shirt is as visible as the locomotive.
There seems to be a sightline problem at this crossing!
Somewhere along the way No. 2 picked up a load of cane.
We had a great day out with No. 2.
In 2003 the steam locomotives of the Hawaiian Philippines Mill railway were offered for sale.
