Day 22 Wednesday - Payerne, Kaeserburg Model Railway and Kerzers Interlocking
Our first stop this morning was at Payerne. There were some heritage items just outside a shed. According to the outdated book on Swiss Railways the group here has two Ae 3/6, 4 Ae 4/7, an Ee 3/3 and a shunting tractor. We were surprised to see the large number of Ae 4/7 as well as the number of other electric locomotives.
From Payerne we went on to Friburg and took the trolley bus out to visit the Kaeserberg model railway.
There weren't very many people there. It is an incredible model railway which functions extremely well, however there doesn't seem to have been any change since we were last here. There is one area to be developed but no progress seems to have been made in the last three years. The introductory movie was very good and explained how they did the work. The model was essentially completed around 2007 and it is aimed at the Switzerland of 1990. The entrance - exit CTC panel was fascinating to watch - very similar to one we had at Reading.
We then walked back up the hill to have another trolley bus ride back into town. We walked to the funicular and took that down to the Old Town. The funicular is a water- balanced one and I believe it is the last one left in Europe.
We had a quick walk around the old town and admired the multi-story former prison which is in very good shape.
A city bus brought us back up the hill and we then went to the station to get our trains back to Yverdon les Bains via Murat, Kerzers and Neuchatel. We stopped at Kerzers to take a look at the preserved interlocking tower there of which Paul has a model on his layout/
