Tuesday 12 September - Travel to Basel

Today is our last day in Switzerland. We travelled to Basel so as to be able to catch an early train to Hamburg tomorrow. We took an indirect route:

Yverdon les Bains to Neuchatel

Neuchatel to La Chaux de Fonds

La Chaux de Fonds to Glovelier (Jura railway narrow gauge)

Glovelier to Basel

This way we were able to travel over that part of the Jura railway that we had not covered yesterday.

A freight train rushes through Neuchatel

A Jura Railway switcher at Saignelegier
This is a railway preservation site at Pre Petitjean which we should visit next time. They have two Portuguese Mallet tank engines on operation.

Combe Tabeillon is a dead end in the woods where trains have to reverse. The track on the left is from La Chaux de Fonds while that on the right goes to Glovelier. In 2018 Paul and I got out here and waited for the next train. It was very peaceful.
At Basel we had lunch at a Migros Restaurant.

These provide a good selection at reasonable prices.
In the afternoon I tried to get a picture of the Basel Rathaus. Almost impossible to get far enough away from it.

It was very busy and there was a continual succession of trams, most of them seven section ones. What struck me was how quiet it was. The trams make very little noise and there is very little automobile traffic. I wonder how it would sound with OC Transpo style buses instead of these trams!
