Railways around Zurich August 20 2024

Old car Number 1 on the Dolderbahn
We took a tram to see progress on the Dolderbahn. A rack railway in the east of Zurich. It only has two cars and there is no room to store any more. Old car number two has been taken away and a Stadler crew was working on the first replacement.

The first new car being worked on at the Dolder station.
From there we took a tram to Zurich Stadlehofn, then a local train to Zurich Altstetten where we caught the Limmatlbahn tram to IKEA. There is a road over the SBB main yard and we took the opportunity to view the line.
Two locomotives forming a 10/10 had brought a train in. That is around 16,000 h.p.
There was an opportunity to see the many trains passing on the main line towards Zurich.
We walked back to the Tivoli centre for lunch at a Migros restaurant. The food was excellent as usual and there was a very wide choice. After a visit to the high tech washrooms (I was concerned that I would not be able to open the door of the closet), we took the tram on to Killwangen. We were surprised to find that a possible lunch restaurant had been closed and demolished to make way for work on the railway station.
Killwangen provided a lot of interest, both passenger and freight.

We then took a train back to Zurich HB and caught another out to Niederbipp, which did not have much activity, and on to Bulach.
These two Re 6/6 locomotives were standing ready to go out on a gravel train.

There was two Traxx locomotives standing in a siding. The company is a new Swiss one.

The two 6/6 locomotives went out together, both in operation. That represents around 22,000 h.p. Pretty impressive for locomotives built 1975-1980.
A train brought us back to Zurich where we spent a short time during the evening rush hour.
The SBB removed the vinyls from most of the RE 460s a few years ago. Possibly as they were going through rebuild at Yverdon. One or two have now appeared with vinyls as here.
