Wednesday 10 September 2025 - Morges, Bercher and Ste-Croix
We looked at three narrow gauge lines in the area today. We left the hotel early to catch a direct train to Morges to see what was happening on the line to Apples and Biere. At Morges the two narrow gauge electric locomotives were about to be coupled up to a train of empty hoppers that were being put on skates.
We then had to make a decision - do we wait here or do we go up the line to see if we can see this train on the move? We decided to go to Vufflens the Chateau and after two passenger trains had passed the the freight train came by..
We then went back to Morges to see what additional action there might be. The ex-SBB green 4/4 was not in evidence but instead they had an ex-SudOstBahn class 456 which seems to have come from Koblenz.
The two small shunters were still in evidence but it does not look as if they are used very much.
We then took a train up the line to the end at Biere and came back to Apples for lunch. Passing a flock of sheep, we went to the cafe/restaurant in the hotel which turned out to be extremely good.
We caught a train back to Morges and another to Lausanne. The Metro took us to Lausanne Flon where we found a Lausanne, Echellens, Bercher (LEB) train destined for Bercher, changing at Echellens.
To get back to Yverdon-les-Bains we took a Post Bus. This is quite an experience the way the driver throws the bus around the narrow country roads with many blind curves.
At Yverdon we took the next train up to Ste-Croix. I believe this to be one of the most amazing lines in Switzerland. It starts off over pleasant rolling countryside as far as Baulmes. From there it does a 360 turn and climbs up the side of the Jura. Trees obscure much of the view but what views there are are stupendous. I put my camera away and just enjoyed the ride, both up and back.
