Friday 4 September 2026 - The Landwasser Viaduct.
We had a lot of traveling planned for today. We left Zurich main station early on the train which took us right through to Landquart where there is a connection with the Rhaetian Railway - narrow gauge. There was bright sun and the ride alongside Lake Zurich was beautiful.
At Landquart the scenery was equally spectacular although much more hilly and mountainous. The train took us right through to Davos Platz Here we changed to a third very unusual railway.
There is a regular train service, every hour between Davos Platz and Filisur but two times a day in each direction the rhb puts on a historic train. Today it was an interesting set of carriages hauled by a GE number 605. The ride was rough although interesting and it was very very bumpy at times and there were no lights in the tunnels. At least we were entitled to an ancient first class coach We passed through a tunnel which has a quick view of a spectacular waterfall and there is also a large viaduct. As we approached Filisur we could get glances of the Landwasser Viaduct.
At Filisur we watched the 605 run round its train and waited for the shuttle to Schmitten where we got off and were able to walk to a very good viewing platform on the Landwasser Viaduct. The railway has built a new platform at Schmitten. From there, there are two walking paths to viewing platforms of this viaduct. There is a short shuttle train that takes viewers out and back from Filisur
It is a World Heritage structure where the railway comes out of a tunnel and straight onto the curved viaduct. The structure is notable in that it was built without the use of scaffolding.
There some four people from Portugal and we helped each other to take pictures of each other against the viaduct.
We managed to get a large number of good shots at this location, but it was getting pretty warm and so we decided to go back to the platform and take the shuttle train back first to Alvaneu and then on to Filisur.
From there we took the train direct to Chur. There was some confusion here as there were two trains due to leave at at 1400 hours from different platforms and going in opposite directions.
At Chur we went out front to see what train was set for the line to Arosa. It was locomotive and coaches.
WE then decided to come directly back to Zurich as it was very hot and we had achieved out objective,

Beautiful photos of the viaduct!
